Description

This is the Carina Nebula, NGC 3372. The picture was taken with an 85 mm refractor and even then, the whole thing didn’t fit in the field of view of that scope. It has many features that set it apart from most nebula in our galaxy. The nebula is very large, it extends around the central star 1 degree in all directions. To put that in perspective, it’s about twice the size of the Orion Nebula. In our galaxy, in addition to being one of the largest, it’s also among the most active star-forming regions known. At its center, just to the right of the central star is the Keyhole Nebula.  That is on my list as a stand-alone target with a much larger scope and a camera that can capture its intricate detail. This wide field view doesn’t do the Keyhole justice. The central star is Eta Carinae.  It is well-known and among the most massive stars in the galaxy. It’s in a group of stars referred to as luminous hypergiants.   It is estimated to be 400 million times brighter than the Sun.
